Logging Rushes

Review of footage

I felt most of our footage was well shot, nicely framed & focused. With a lot of our shots, we made sure the lighting of the sun was in peak placement to make the shot bright and bring out the colours of the environment. Some shots, however, has dark grey skies and didn't have too much colour to them. I had fun filming, we had a light easy feel to filming, and we all managed to have a laugh together which made it easier to bond as a group however sometimes we would joke for too long and low ourselves down a bit. We played around with the focusing in some shots, going from the character being in focus to the ball being in focus to create a depth of field. We shared our ideas quite freely in the group however sometimes people wouldn't speak up and it seemed like they were fine with one take, as the recording circumstances where terrible. Unfortunately, the audio was lost due to the wind and the weather would constantly change causing big issues in the final edit.

Initial Edit Structure

I mostly used the script when editing our video. I edited the scenes together then put them in the correct order. And points I thought it could look better if I swapped some of the scenes but in the end, I kept it the same. The final film has two flashback scenes which were hard to work with, and show it was a flashback. But eventually, I gave each flashback a different effect. For the first one, I added a black & white overlay and a blur around the edge of the screen. For the second, I kept the black & white overlay but added some wavey blur effects to show it was a different flashback. When the basketball games are being edited its a mix match of fast cuts of the ball going into the hoop, the players dribbling, blocking one another, all the typical things to expect from a basketball game except made faster, to keep the action following and intensity at high.

Linking Audio to Visual

When filming scenes with dialogue, we focused on both the footage and audio, to make sure it looked crisp and had good quality audio. However, as we filmed predominantly outside, there was a lot of wind and background noise making the actor's voices unheard and the audio practically unusable.

In the end, we decided we would have to dub over the actors. We tried to record the best audio we could while filming then took the footage to a quiet sound recording studio where we got the actors to dub over their lines. We let them watch the footage to get a feel of how they sounded and to make it as accurate as possible. The actors put in headphones and lip-synced with the footage.

While editing, I used the original audio to sync up the newly recorded audio for the scene. This worked quite well and made it sound more professional. At first, it did sound off as the only audio was the voice. We recorded foley sound of wind and footsteps to add to the edit. I also went online to find royalty free sounds to add.
